Grateful for Mentors

I am grateful for mentors, role models who have walked the steps I walk, and those who can offer not only advice but also friendship and wisdom. I have come to understand that I know very little about most things. Yet, even the smartest and wisest people I admire once were like me; for every mentor was once a mentee. While I may know very little, with the help of a mentor, I may be directed to learn, to grow, to develop into whatever I want or need to become: a better man, employee, thinker, on and on. With the guidance of a mentor, I have access to their body of knowledge, their edifice of experience and all the life lessons that reside on its many floors. The path that I tread may be unique to me and ultimately, I might be my best counsel. However, it’s more likely that the obstacles I seek to overcome have already been surmounted, the mountains already climbed, and the trails already trampled. I may improve my life trajectory if I have the discernment to pick mentors who can advise me in my brightest and darkest hours. I may live happily—perhaps at least be content with the trades I’ve made—if I have the humility to ask for help, for the opinion of someone who knows.

In my life, I have had the fortune to meet many people whom I can call mentors. They have offered their time and guidance and, most of all, humanity; their counsel has built in me a gratitude of compassion and people.

I am grateful for mentors.
